Heritage Terrace Driveway — South Yarra
A Victorian terrace off a South Yarra laneway, where the frontage is barely a single vehicle wide and the crossover is shared with the neighbouring residence. The brief was a driveway that read as part of the heritage streetscape — muted stone, tight joints, no pattern — while standing up to daily vehicle use and the root pressure of a mature street tree.
Planning the pour.
The site is laneway-served — the rear lane is the only practical setdown for a concrete truck, and it is a single lane with no passing room. The crossover at the front is shared with the neighbouring terrace, meaning the pour had to be staged so the neighbour's vehicle access was not blocked beyond an agreed window. A mature plane tree on the nature strip constrained the pump reach and required root protection during preparation. We coordinated delivery timing with the concrete supplier for a single continuous pour, positioned the pump in the lane, and staged the finishing crew to work the surface in sequence as each bay was placed. The heritage overlay along the street meant the crossover profile and the front edge detail had to match the existing bluestone kerb — no square-cut edge, no exposed aggregate running to the boundary.

Site discussion & access planning
We walked the lane, the crossover and the nature strip with the owner before anything was drawn. The pump position, the truck staging and the finishing sequence were planned around the single-lane setdown and the shared crossover. The heritage overlay was checked with council — the front edge had to be detailed to the existing bluestone kerb, and the surface finish had to read as stone, not as patterned concrete.
Subgrade and base preparation
The existing driveway was removed and the subgrade excavated to depth, working around the plane tree roots with hand excavation where required. A compacted granular base was placed in layers and tested, with a root barrier installed along the nature strip edge to protect the tree and the slab. Drainage was connected to stormwater before the formwork went in — a slot drain at the low point, discharging to the existing connection.
Formwork, joints and the pour
Formwork was set out to a joint plan that respected the heritage proportions — bays sized to the terrace frontage, not to a default. The concrete was placed in a single continuous pour from the lane, pumped over the rear fence and finished in sequence. The aggregate was revealed to a consistent depth, then honed to a warm, low-sheen surface that reads as stone from the curb. Joints were cut the following morning, edges tooled to a shallow arris, and the surface sealed once cured.
Handover and aftercare
The driveway was walked with the owner, sealed and detailed, with cure time and the first-season aftercare explained. The shared crossover was restored to its original level so the neighbour's access was uninterrupted. We remain contactable for resealing on a schedule that suits the finish and the exposure.
