Pool Surrounds
Alfresco, pools & outdoor rooms.
The outdoor room is where Melbourne lives for half the year. We pour pool surrounds, alfresco floors, fire-pit zones and landscape elements in slip-rated, heat-tolerant finishes — a continuous stone plane that ties water, garden and entertaining together.
How we work.
Slip-rated pool surrounds
Honed and exposed finishes rated for wet areas, detailed to comply and to feel right underfoot.
Alfresco & outdoor rooms
Continuous floors that run from the interior threshold out to the fire pit, with joints planned for structure and shade.
Fire-pit zones
Heat-tolerant concrete platforms and integrated seating, finished to match the surround.
Landscape elements
Retaining walls, benches, planters and steps, poured and honed as part of one material language.
The quotation process
Every commission follows the same five steps — from the first site walk to the final handover. Nothing is left to the day of the pour.
Site discussion
We assess the pool shell, the surrounding levels, the landscape plan and the access for plant and materials — particularly on tight inner-east sites where fencing and side access constrain the pour.
Measure & design
Coping profile, deck levels, drainage falls and slip-rated finish are documented against the pool, the paving and the landscape. Expansion joints and transitions to garden edges are resolved on paper.
Preparation
Subgrade is compacted and drained, formwork set to the agreed falls, and drainage connected to stormwater. Coping and edge details are set out before the pour.
Pour & finish
The surround is placed, screeded to falls, and finished to the specified slip-rated texture — honed or exposed. Coping is detailed, joints cut, and the surface sealed for salt and UV resistance.
Handover
The surround is walked with you, sealed and detailed, with cure time, sealing maintenance and slip performance explained. We remain contactable through the first season.
A considered palette.
A pool surround must perform wet and barefoot, not just look dry. We specify honed or exposed finishes with a documented slip rating suited to wet traffic, then seal for salt and UV resistance. Coping — the edge where the pool shell meets the deck — is formed as part of the pour in a bullnose, square-edge or rebated profile to suit the waterline tile and the landscape. For alfresco and outdoor rooms, the finish is specified to carry through from the interior threshold so the surface reads as one continuous plane.
Built for the site.
A pool surround is a wet, barefoot surface that must perform as well as it looks. We specify the slip rating against the wet barefoot standard, not the dry commercial standard, and document it at the design stage. Salt and UV exposure drive the seal specification — a pool surround sealed for a residential pool is not the same as a driveway sealed for vehicle traffic. Coping is formed as part of the pour, not added after, so the edge where the shell meets the deck is one material. For tight inner-east sites, pump placement and staging are planned around fencing, side access and established planting. Drainage is engineered to carry water away from the pool shell and the residence, with strip drains at the low points connected to stormwater before the pour begins.
